Moons in Starfield are secondary planetary-mass objects that orbit a Planet. Moons are found within the various Star Systems where players can explore to survey different findings such as locations, resources, alien lifeforms, asteroids, and factions, including the capability of building an outpost. Starfield is a vast open-world game and it doesn't constrict the player to a linear path, which means you are free to explore any Star System to search for a moon.

How to Travel to a Moon in Starfield?

To travel to a moon in Starfield, first, you'll need to learn how to "Jump". Traveling to a Star System or a Star in Starfield requires you to pilot a Ship and plot a route to reach the designated Star System. There are two ways to do this, first is by "Jumping", a term used for Fast Travel in Starfield, and you can do this if you want to focus on the objectives of a Mission that requires you to travel to another Star System. Simply open the Missions menu and press the corresponding button (R on PC) to plot a course to your next objective.

On the other hand, if you are exploring the galaxy, you will need to open the Starp Map and link the systems to create a path leading to your destination. This could be from Point A to Point B and multiple jumps on each linked system. A couple of things to consider if you are jumping between Star Systems are Jump Range (Light Years), Cargo Hold, and the Ship's Fuel. The amount of cargo you have on the ship determines how much fuel will be used and how far you can Grav Drive Jump through the galaxy.

To put it in simple terms, the heavier your ship is, the higher the consumption value is for jumping making it difficult to reach your destination, and the lighter the ship is, the less fuel is consumed and you can do multiple jumps to reach further star systems. By looking at the Star Map, you can choose to scan any available Moon/s orbiting the planet to find different Resources or a landing spot so you can explore the moon on foot.

Factions and Moon Levels in Starfield

Starfield Star Systems Levels

A Star System Level primarily works similarly when venturing to a planet or moon in Starfield. The Star Systems in Starfield consist of levels that determine its difficulty, and whatever the level is of a Star System, it will be the same level within its consisting planets and moons. These are not level requirements, but instead, recommended player levels. Players are free to explore the different Star Systems and they can choose to investigate a Level 100 Star System on Player Level 1, but of course, it is highly recommended to survey a high-level Star System once you've reached its level to match its difficulty, making it less taxing to explore.

Starfield Factions

The different Star Systems are controlled by various Factions. Maintaining a good relationship with these groups will benefit you such as avoiding a bounty off of your head, being able to trade with them, speaking to the members, participating in faction-type missions, and more. There are many factions in Starfield, some who are friendly, while others have decided to separate themselves and are considered dangerous and hostile arms in the galaxy. Not all moons or planets are controlled by the many factions in the galaxy, to identify if a Star System, planet, or moon is controlled by a faction, check the upper right hand of the Star Map to identify if it is controlled by a friendly or hostile group.
