Powers in Starfield are special abilities that players earn by completing Temples. Players find the first temple, Temple Eta, during Into the Unknown, a main story mission that takes place on the planet Procyon III. This is around level 12~16 always taking into consideration the amount of Side content that players have decided to engage on.
Powers have diverse uses during combat and allow players to experiment in combat scenarios. This grants them a new tool, besides Weapons, to deal damage or control the battlefield during Combat. Do note that some Powers can be used during Conversation or exploration.
How many powers are there in Starfield?
There are 24 power slots in the Powers tree, divided into three concentric circles. The smallest has 6 slots, the one in the middle has 8 power slots and the outer circle has 10 power slots.
Every time players complete a temple, they earn a new power. By inspecting the newly acquired power, players learn its ability, as well as its power cost. Players can access the Powers Tree after unlocking their first power and then pressing the Options button. They can select a power from there and equip it. Note that only one power at a time can be equipped.
Power Gauge in Starfield
After acquiring and equipping their first Power, a new blue gauge will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen, just below the health bar. This blue bar is the power gauge. It decreases when you cast a Power, and it will slowly start to refill while you are not casting any new power.
How to Unlock Powers in Starfield
Powers are unlocked by solving light puzzles in Temples. The first temple Temple Eta will always be found on Procyon III during the Main Mission Into the Unknown. Afterward, Vladimir Sall will inform you whenever he finds more large grav anomaly readings that match the Artifacts you bring back to The Lodge, and you'll be able to visit more Temples through the Mission Power from Beyond. He'll periodically find more Temples and keep reactivating the Mission whenever he does. Barring a few Powers locked in Companion (Barret) and Main Missions, most Powers are obtained this way. There seems to be a limit to how many times Power from Beyond can be initiated during a playthrough. Players can then choose to visit every single Planets or Moons within Star Systems on foot, to explore them and find anomalies by scanning your surroundings.

Starfield Temple Puzzles
As you enter the temple, a few concentric rings in the middle of the room will react to your presence and start spinning. You will notice that there is zero gravity in the room, and you will have to float towards sparkling lights that will start spawning to complete the puzzle. Once you are done with all the sparkling lights, you will be centered inside the ring and after a short cutscene, you will be outside the temple, with a new power.
What happens with Powers in New Game+
After starting a new playthrough players will be able to search the galaxy for the Temples once again. All times after the first that they obtain the same Power will upgrade that Power instead. Powers can be upgraded until the tenth rank, increasing in power and duration each time. Temples will be randomized on the new playthrough so you won't find them on the same Planets you found them first. During a New Game Plus run, players get to keep all their Skills and Powers obtained from the previous run. As such, there will be a chance that you'll encounter the same Temples, albeit in different Locations, as the ones you encountered in your last playthrough. This is not a waste, however, as each Power can be upgraded into an even stronger version of itself for a maximum of ten times. After maxing out a Power, you'll inevitably have a higher chance of encountering the Temples that grant Powers that you don't have yet or have yet to be maxed out.

If technology is advanced enough it's indistinguishable from magic. This game has A LOT of problems, the space powers aren't one of them.
