What Does a Crew Member Do in Starfield?

A Crew Member can be a Companion that you will meet in Starfield or any NPC that offers their service to you. A Crew Member comes with skills that rank from 1-4 which varies from Outpost Management, Ship Combat, Weapon Handling,Tech Skills, and more. These skills are considered as passives which grants a bonus to the stats of your Outposts or Ships, or other player stats and can be useful when engaging in space combat, or outpost management.

A Crew Member in Starfield can improve your maximum health, increase your ship's shield's capacity, repair ship systems faster, increase cargo links build limit, and more. The benefits that you can get from recruiting a Companion or Crew member will boil down to the type of skill/skills that they have and will also depend on their rank. Some high-tier crew members can have up to 4 Skills

Where can I find Crew Members for My Outposts and Ships in Starfield?

Crew Members can be recruited as long as the NPC offers their services or you hire them by paying credits. You will know this during your dialogue with them including the main Companions. Some of the recruits can be found in bars, lodges, diners, and major cities in Starfield. During the early stages of exploration in Starfield, you will find a planet called Jemison, located in the Alpha Centauri System. There's a busy area on this planet called The Viewport andThe Lodge where you will find many different NPCs such as VendorsCompanions, as well as recruits from the Constellation crew and other factions in Starfield.

Make sure to engage with people inside any bar, pub, or diner that you will visit, and you may just find your newest recruit for your next expedition. Some crew members can be hired for credits, while others, like Unique Companions, don't come with a cost, but will usually involve completing a Mission or a dialogue.

How Many Crew Members are there in Starfield?

At the moment, we have discovered 30 possible Crew Members, including the Companions and 1 Secret Companion/Crew Member. This list will be updated as we discover more possible Crew Members. If you are keen on getting Achievements in Starfield, recruiting a total of 10 separate crewmates will unlock 'The Family You Choose' achievement.

Increase the Maximum Count of Crew Members

Initially, players will only be able to recruit only 3 active Crew Members. To increase this number, players can opt to unlock the Ship Command, which is a Social Skill in Starfield allowing players to have up to 4 on the first rank, and with a higher rank, players can get up to 8 total active crew members.

How to Assign Crew Members in Starfield

During the early stages of your exploration in Starfield, you will find that Companions will be available to help you out on your Missions. Once you have decided to add a member to your crew and you need to assign them, follow this guide to learn how to assign crew members to your Ships or Outposts in Starfield.

The first thing that you'll do is accept a Companion's offer to join you or to hire someone with credits. Then, go into the Menu and select the 'Ship' menu that you will see at the bottom left of the screen. Follow the guide below using the basic controls.

  • Xbox: Press the Menu Button, then choose the Ship Icon
  • PC: Press Tab then Left Click on the Ship Icon\

Second, look at the bottom right of the screen where you can see the [Crew] field button.

  • Xbox: Press on Y button on your controller
  • PC: Press C

Finally, you will now have a screen where you can see all of the active crew members and where they are assigned. With this selection up, you can now assign or reassign crew members as needed in Starfield.

Can you Romance Crew Members in Starfield?

Companions, Crew Members, and NPCs in Starfield all come from different backgrounds with their own aspirations, stories, and skills to help you out in and out of combat. Aside from that, players also get romance-able characters that will let them start a relationship with some of them. Starfield Companions has an affinity meter that lets you measure your progress in terms of your relationship with that specific character. So when you do something that they like, it will increase your affinity, and if you do something that they find distasteful, you will get a decrease. Take note that Companions in Starfield are all good-natured.

When you get to a point where the affinity meter is maxed, you will get an option to take your relationship to the next level. You may also visit Romance Guide for more details on the characters that you can romance, how to successfully get into a relationship with companions, and more.

Starfield Vasco Crew Guide

Vasco is a unique robotic companion that you can take with you on your expeditions. A spectacular robot that has been crafted and modified by the Constellation that is designed to provide support across Missions. One of the key things about Vasco is that, given his robotic nature, it can carry payloads much heavier than a regular human can, and it can easily traverse rough terrains.

Vasco is primarily created to provide aid and protection but when it comes to fighting, Vasco is more than able to deal with hostile attackers, and will only do so in self-defense. Vasco also has 3 Skills that can benefit your Ship's systems such as EM Weapon System at Rank 1, which allows your ship to deal 10% increased damage, a Rank 1 Aneutronic Fusion which allows your Ship reactors to produce an extra unit of power, and finally, the Rank 2 Shield Systems which improves your Ship's shield systems by 40%.

By now, we know that Companions can be recruited to man your Ships and Outposts, but given Vasco's set of skills, it is recommended to have him join you on your ship while exploring.

How to Recruit Vasco in Starfield

You can recruit Vasco by completing Mission: One Small Step and by speaking to him at The Lodge, after Sarah Morgan officially welcomes you as a formal member of the Constellation.

Starfield Amelia Earhart Crew Guide

A lot of the Companions and Crew Members in Starfield can be found in bars, diners, and shops, or maybe they're a Main Companion, and you will find them as part of a Mission. However, there is one unique companion that you can only meet if you are willing to go the lengths of traveling literal systems.

Meet Amelia Earhart, a nod to one of the most popular pilots in the 1930s. Amelia was a pioneer in aviation and was known as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean but one unfaithful day, the skilled pilot went missing. Still, no one knows what truly happened to Amelia Earhart, and Starfield has put a spin on that by adding her as a Companion in-game.

In order to meet the female pilot, one needs to travel far distances in space and discover a lost colony. This expedition will require players to travel into the longest distance in the Settled Systems, and they will need a massively upgraded ship, enhanced skills, and an exceptional crew to make it.

A little information is known about Amelia Earhart but we will give you a rundown below of how to recruit Amelia Earhart.

How to Recruit Secret Companion Amelia Earhart in Starfield

The name of the Planet that you will be traveling to is Charybdis 3 found in Charybdis System- a distant system. To reach this, you have two options where you can start from which are Hyla System and Ophion System then, travel to the following Star Systems in order.

  1. Moloch System
  2. Shoza System
  3. Ixyll System
  4. Zosta System
  5. then finally, the Charybdis System

Take note that this region is Level 65 and will be a recommended Piloting rank of 3. You may build a ship to reach this planet or purchase one with a minimum of  23 LY. Once you have safely landed in Charybdis 3, a new mission will begin for you: "Operation Starseed". Upon landing, you will reach a facility called 'The Crucible' where an audible voice can be heard that will urge you to land.

Then, shortly after landing, Tobias, a robotic assistant will greet you and will detect your crew as an 'Outsider' because of your unknown origin. You will discover that this place is full of clones of prominent people from ages ago, including an emperor from the 1100s, a queen from the past, and a US president, all of whom are residing on the same planet- each of the 3 leaders have a different approach on how they want to handle the situation in the facility.

  • The Emperor wants to destroy The Crucible and escape
  • The US President wants to disable The Crucible but wants to take refuge on the planet until they are ready
  • The Queen wants to fix The Crucible and they hope for a new Golden Age under their leadership

When you are ready, continue to head to the facility and you will find that the inside is infested with Maggotmaws. Your objective here is to locate 7 slates imprinted with clues throughout the facility. Don't worry, the location is filled with markers as you find the slates throughout your mission.

After collecting all 7 of them, use the computer and hand over the notes to whomever you have chosen: The Emperor, A Queen, or a US President. Afterward, your next mission will involve looking for access to a restricted section in The Crucible and will prompt you to travel to another planet at Zelazny 1. You will be able to retrieve the codes to unlock the restricted area from this planet, where the clones originally came from. This is yet, another distant planet that needs a minimum of 27 LY. Another upgrade to your ship and crew will likely be necessary before you make the trip.

Upon arrival at the planet, your next objective is to locate the codes needed for the restricted section in The Crucible. Once you have collected them, travel back to Charybdis 3 to unravel the fate of the facility. This is up to you, whichever leader's plan you choose to go with.

Now, whatever the result is, you will be able to help Amelia Earhart escape the colony once you gain access to the restricted section. You can have her as your Companion but romancing her is not available.
