Status Effects in Starfield are ailments that provide certain debuffs and even damage to the character in some cases. Status Effects are usually caused by some external source or an external event that leaves lasting consequences for the player's character. Players can find themselves afflicted with either Injuries or Infections, which are the two main types of Status Effects. When the player is afflicted with a Status Effect, they will be able to see its Severity and Prognosis in the menu. From there, players will be able to decide what to do with regard to the Status Effect, whether to let the character heal from it naturally or if there's a need to use an Aid Item to treat it.

Starfield What are Status Effects and Where to Find Them

When players explore the many Locations in the vast universe of the game, their characters will inevitably traverse areas that have harsh conditions that will be hazardous to their health, sometimes spanning entire Planets or Moons. Protective Equipment with Armor Stats that match the resistance needed for the specific conditions of the area is necessary to explore it. Otherwise, players will find themselves afflicted by Status Effects. Players can also incur Status Effects as a result of certain actions like falling down from a great height or coming into contact with extremely sharp objects. These Status Effects have different symptoms that will negatively affect the character.

When the player enters an area that is hazardous without equipping the right gear, they'll first get a red notification on the lower left area of the screen of the type of hazardous environment they are entering. If exposed to the conditions enough, they'll then be notified that they've been afflicted by a Status Effect, through both the top part of the screen and the circular navigator again on the lower left. To view the afflictions they currently have in detail, players simply need to go to the main menu and then look for the corresponding button for the Status option, and then press it to get to the Status Effect tab.

What are Severity and Prognosis in Starfield?

In the Status Effect screen, players are able to see the Severity and the Prognosis of the Status Effects that they are afflicted with. The Severity of the affliction informs how many symptoms of the Status Effect will affect the character until it gets treated. A normal Severity will not be indicated at all, but will only affect the player with one symptom. Acute and Severe Status Effects affect players with two and three symptoms respectively.

In the example above, players are able to see just one symptom for a basic or normal Severity of Lung Damage. Prognosis on the other hand refers to the character's ability to naturally heal from the Status Effect. Prognosis is always either Poor, Stable, or Excellent. Exposure to the same hazard or accident will increase the Severity of the Status Effect and reset the Prognosis back to Poor.

How to Heal Status Effects in Starfield?

Status Effect afflictions can naturally heal on their own given enough time. Prognosis also determines how long this would take, with an Excellent Prognosis taking the quickest to recover. Every step the player takes has a chance of healing the Status Effect naturally, with the highest chance given to an Excellent Prognosis, while a Stable Prognosis has a lower chance per step. Prognosis for a Status Effect gets better over time, provided the character is careful to not be exposed to any more hazards or untoward accidents, thus increasing the treatment chances over time. Additionally, a Poor Prognosis has no chance of recovering per step, and players will have to be patient and wait for the Prognosis to improve if they want their chances of naturally healing to go higher. Alternatively, Status Effects can be healed by consuming Aid Items that correspond to the specific Status Effects afflicted.
