Factions in Starfield are the groups and organizations that are prevalent throughout the game. Different Factions can have control or influence over set Locations and will have varying interests and values. Players can align themselves with different Factions and become allies by completing tasks and actively seeking out and participating in Missions for the Factions. Aligning with Factions can provide different benefits, such as access to their resources, or discounts on goods and services.
How to Join a Faction in Starfield?
Joining the available main Factions in Starfield can be initiated with a simple interaction or application. This will usually be followed up by additional Missions or quests that can be viewed from your Missions Menu. Specific assignments from these Factions will be sorted as a Faction Mission. There is a specific Faction tab to view all Faction Missions which will list out your objectives, progress, descriptions, and which Faction it belongs to. Players will be able to join all Major Factions in the game and will not be subject to choosing just one. Aligning with specific factions may affect your relationships if these a conflict of interest.
There are a total of 5 Factions that players can join. Constellation, is related to the main story and players will join by default. The other 4 Factions are: United Colonies, Freestar Rangers, Crimson Fleet, and Ryujin Industries. In the case of this four, players have to actively join up by completing an application or a Mission. Joining up in any of these four isn't mandatory for completing the game, thus making them completely missable. However, it will enrich player's experience by giving more context and points of view of different groups of people in the Starfield universe.
Completing a Faction mission will always unlock the next, regardless of decisions taken while completing it. There are no branching paths, and regardless of some changes in dialogues, the outcome remains the same.
Faction Territories in Starfield
Different Locations, Star Systems, or Planets could be controlled by a specific Faction. This is indicated in the top right corner when viewing different destinations. If you're planning to enter a Location controlled by a hostile Faction, the Faction indicator will be displayed in red. Entering these hostile territories could result in Combat.
Can I Join every Faction in Starfield?
Yes, players can join all 5 available Factions at the same time. There is no overlap between them, and completing missions with a certain Faction will not prevent you from joining any of the other ones.
Benefits of Joining Factions in Starfield
Joining Factions will grant players access to additional Missions that can reap additional rewards when completed. This is in addition to the basic benefits, discounts, and possible resources different Factions may provide in their territories. This also allows players to gain access to more Locations and Systems while avoiding hostile encounters. Having good relationships with the Factions will also allow you to travel with members from the Faction as your Companion. You will also gain the associated Achievement for the Factions you manage to join.

Hostile Factions in Starfield
Hostile Factions are more likely to attack. You can check if you are entering a hostile Faction territory since it will be indicated in red as you view the details of each location and system from the Starmap. Hostile Factions can then put a bounty on you However, you can win the favor of these hostile Factions by performing specific tasks or Missions for them until they are no longer considered hostile.
Does Faction progression carry on to New Game+?
If players complete the main storyline of Starfield, and start a New Game+ they will notice that their Factions progression will be reset. Do note that players don't have a limited time to join a Faction, and may decide to do so at any point while playing through the Main Story.

About Constellation
Constellation is the main faction players in Starfield will start with. Constellation is an organization focused on exploration. They have a base that operates in The Lodge, found in the MAST District of New Atlantis, Jemison -- A UC territory.

Players begin progressing through Constellation Missions by default and start fulfilling tasks as a Constellation member from the start of the Prologue. As a Constellation member, players can still explore other Factions and can join in their causes for additional Missions and Rewards.
About United Colonies
The United Colonies are one of the major Factions of the Setteled Systems. Their Embassy is located in New Atlantis, Jemison. They welcome applicated to join the Vanguard which will eventually earn you UC Citizenship and all the accompanying benefits. The motto of the Vanguard is "Supra et Ultra" - above and beyond. That is where we serve - beyond the furthest reaches of the United Colonies military, and with honor and duty above reproach.

Players will have the opportunity to join the United Colonies while progressing through Main Missions. You can also ask Sarah Morgan about the UC Vanguard to gain more information. Speak to Commander John Tuala within the MAST building in the MAST District on New Atlantis, Jemison, in the Alpha Centauri System. He will tell you about the next steps to become a UC Vanguard.
About Ryujin Industries
Ryujin Industries is a Faction players can join early on in the game by visiting any Kiosk to submit an application. They are known for being leaders in technology and aim to develop the latest tech, believing there is always room for improvement. Members of this company may align with other Factions.

During exploration, you may hear the Ryujin Industries job listing announcement while passing any Ryujin Industries Kiosk. One can be found opposite Galbank in the MAST District at New Atlantis, Jemison in the Alpha Centauri System. This Mission can be unlocked as early as Chapter 1. The related Faction Mission is activated immediately after hearing the announcement and you will be tasked to apply for the job. After filling out the application, you can report to Imogene Salzo on the Operations floor at the Ryujin Tower in Neon for your interview to continue the process. Completing Back to the Grind makes you an official member of the Faction.
About Crimson Fleet
The Crimson Fleet are the well-known pirates that will take what they believe is theirs. You can have hostile encounters with them or even engage in helping with taking them and their ships down. The Crimson Fleet is also a Faction that can be joined
How to Join the Crimson Fleet

In order to join the Crimson Fleet, players have to complete the first two Faction Missions of United Colonies. Complete both Supra et Ultra and Grunt Work to automatically receive the first Crimson Fleet Faction Mission in your quest log, called Deep Cover. Continue to complete the next Faction Missions: Rook Meets King to officially join the Crimson Fleet.
About Freestar Rangers
The Freestar Rangers has a Commitment to Freedom and exploration. Their capital and Star System, the Cheyenne System was founded and named by Solomon Coe, who made Akila City what it is today - a symbol of hope and freedom for every world in the Settled Systems. Players can choose to be recruited as a Freestar Ranger to ensure the safety and security of the Freestar Collective. They also have jurisdiction over any local security when tracking fugitives.
How to Join Freestar Rangers

Players can begin encountering and accepting Missions from the Freestar Collective once they progress through enough of the Main Storyline. You will need to reach The Empty Nest You will then have access to the quests Job Gone Wrong or Deputized. Complete Deputized as a way of proving their worthiness to join the Freestar Rangers. Ranger Emma Wilcox will provide you with a task in Akila City, Akila. When the task is complete, report back to her.
