Isolation is a Social Skill in Starfield. Isolation is a Social Skill that amplifies individual combat prowess when operating alone, boosting damage resistance and weapon damage in the absence of companions or crew.

Isolation Ranks Progression in Starfield
Isolation has 4 Ranks that players can unlock. Each Rank introduces a unique effect, offering a diverse range of benefits. To progress to the next Rank, players must complete a challenge specific to that Rank. Only after completing the challenge can you invest another point in the Skill

Do +10% weapon damage and gain 15 Damage Resistance for each Spacesuit and Helmet equipped when you don't have a companion or any crew. | Kill 20 enemies while not in command of a follower. |

Do +20% weapon damage and gain 30 Damage Resistance for each Spacesuit and Helmet equipped when you don't have a companion or any crew. | Kill 50 enemies while not in command of a follower. |
Rank 3 |
Do +30% weapon damage and gain 45 Damage Resistance for each Spacesuit and Helmet equipped when you don't have a companion or any crew. | Kill 100 enemies while not in command of a follower. |
Rank 4 |
Do +40% weapon damage and gain 60 Damage Resistance for each Spacesuit and Helmet equipped when you don't have a companion or any crew. | Complete the previous rank challenge to unlock this rank. |

Apparently this works as long as you don't have an active follower including if you make people wait. This might be a bug so no idea if it will be fixed. But you can have crew on your ship just your companions and crew can't be a follower.

Anybody know if this applies to ship weapons without a crew also? Wording is weird

Does anyone know if the "weapon damage" works with Unarmed combat?

Odd how they worded the skill description. Makes it sound like if you have crew assigned to your ship you don't get the bonus, but levels up as long as you don't have followers.
I was able to test, and it works on the weaponry of the ships
