Starfield Matters of the Hart Walkthrough

To kick off the "Matters of the Hart" adventure, you should be pretty friendly with Sam Coe. After traveling together, Cora Coe suggests helping her mom, Lillian Hart. Apparently, they've been writing letters, but Lillian went silent for a while, which is unusual.
Starting this mission means you'll have Sam as your companion throughout, so be sure you enjoy his company or have enough time to finish the quest in one go. Responding to Cora's request, head to Neon City on Volii Alpha in the Volii system.

Once in Neon City, go to the Freestar Rangers building in the Core area. You'll find it on the left, heading towards the Astral Lounge. Ranger Ryce isn't amiable, but you'll discuss what needs to be done. You'll need to get into Lillian's room, which you can do by persuading him or letting him know you're a ranger on official business.

Searching Lillian's room reveals notes about an ongoing investigation. She's gone undercover with a gang called the Syndicate in Neon City. She mentions an informant she needs to contact and their address. That's your only lead, so go to the Ryujin apartments building. Interact with the elevator to go directly to the right floor. Since you don't have a key, getting in is tricky until Cora uses her tools to pick the lock. Kids, right? Inside, it's a regular apartment, except for the bedroom, which is a mess with blood. You'll find a data slate between the living room and kitchen. Lillian needs to be rescued; her cover is nearly blown.

To save Lillian in "Matters of the Hart," head to the Victor Compound on McClure II in the McClure system. Some enemies may be challenging, but with Sam's help, you can handle them. Clear the outside area first while Cora looks for the team. Inside, follow the quest marker until you meet up with Lillian. Be careful not to accidentally harm her, as Sam won't like that. Once you're back on your spaceship, you can ask Lillian many questions. She and Sam argue about Cora's safety. If you thought rescuing her would be awkward, be prepared for some third-wheeling during the rest of the "Matters of the Hart" quest line.

While rescuing Lillian was the initial goal, returning to Neon City wasn't part of her plan. Instead, she wants to organize a counterattack to take down Valerie, the leader of the Syndicate. Since many people and security cameras see who you are, you'll likely have enemies coming after you. This is the only way to ensure Cora's complete safety. This part of the quest involves many space jumps to reach the Dumas spaceship. The reward is a message with the location of a secure cache, but consider the distance you need to travel. Board the Dumas and get the news you need, then head back to the Andromas system, specifically Andromas III.

Once you reach the cache, Syndicate ships will start landing to unload attackers. There will be three waves, each with around 10-15 enemies split into two groups. The second and third waves have robots, and the third one includes Valerie herself. They are slower than you, so taking cover behind parts of the environment is a good plan. Planting mines throughout the battlefield can help reduce their numbers. Surviving the attack means the Syndicate's reign of terror is over. But the "Matters of the Hart" quest isn't entirely done. With the enemies defeated, Sam decides it's a good time to talk things out with his baby mama. Unfortunately, you're the mediator for this discussion.

Once their conversation ends positively, Sam invites you to meet him in Akila City at the bar near the Solomon Coe statue. He'll find a spot near the edge as you approach it, but the bar is on the left before The Rock when you're coming from the star yard. This is the most enjoyable part of the "Matters of the Hart" quest. If you want to pursue a romance with Sam, don't miss it.
